Middle Phase (Years 7 – 9)

The Middle Phase at Padua College is very much a transition phase between primary and upper secondary and provides students with the opportunity to take further responsibility for their own learning and experiment within a safe and structured learning environment. A core teacher model is used in the middle phase, allowing for students to have access to at least one teacher for a significant part of their school week. This core teacher model provides for the development of relationships and the establishment of a safe learning environment, both essential for students in this learning phase. Students in the Middle Phase begin with set subjects which give them broad access to a variety of subjects and in Year 9, are allowed to select three electives subjects in order to target their learning pathway towards areas of interest to them. For the first three semesters of Years 7 and 8, students study the following subjects:

  • Religious Education
  • Science
  • History
  • Geography
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Japanese
  • Music
  • Art

  • Design and Technology

After being exposed to a wide range of subjects in Years 5 to 8, students are given the opportunity in the second semester of Year 8 to tailor their learning by selecting three elective subjects in addition to the core subjects of Mathematics, English, Religious Education, Science, History, Geography and Health and Physical Education. This tailoring continues into Year 9 where students are able to select three electives each semester in order to allow for wide exposure to a range of subject areas as they prepare to enter their senior phase of schooling.
